Sunday Series Training Race: Strava Segment Group Ride

June 21 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

You must be a member of the Buffalo Bicycling club (or the Niagara Frontier Bicycle Club) to participate.   Membership categories eligible for this: Full, Rookie, Junior/College, Out-of-Town, Group Ride/Workout, and Cyclocross.  Not eligible: ——–.  To sign up for membership, click here.

All season long, the BBC is partnering with the NFBC (Niagara Frontier Bicycle Club) for our group rides!  We expect a lot of road riders on our group rides of a wide range of abilities.  We will have A/B, and C group leaders that will hold each group to a prescribed pace so everyone has a group to ride with.  Please listen to the instructions in the parking lot from our ride leaders and head out and stay together for a great ride!  This collaboration between the BBC and NFBC will get more of us riding together and riders from each club trying out the other.

As we head out, this ride will have 5 uphill Strava segments that will be the designated fast segments.  We’ll ride to each as a group, start the segments together and race to the top.  We’ll stop and regroup after each hilly segment.  For this ride, the A and B groups will ride together so that all BBC and NFBC members can be scored properly, followed by the C group.  This race will be scored based on your accumulated time across all segments according to your uploaded Strava file, lowest time wins.  The C group will not be scored, so it will be a fully cooperative group ride.

Scoring will be done that evening and announced Monday morning, so please upload your ride when you get home.  While Strava is highly highly recommended, if you do not have Strava, please report your placing on each segment to a ride leader with the names of other members who finished next to you so we can give you an approximate time.

Parking:

Start and Parking: Chestnut Ridge Park in the upper lot by the tennis courts.

Our group ride this week is a 35-mile route starting from Chestnut Ridge that has 5 scored Strava segments.  Your cumulative time across all 5 on your Strava file will determine the final leaderboard!

What You Should Expect on Race Day:

  1. Please plan to arrive 30 minutes early to get into your riding clothes and get your bike ready
  2. Write down your name on the sign-in sheet when it becomes available
  3. At 10am, we will roll out the A/B combined group together, followed by the C group.  It is a group ride until we hit each designated segment to race, then regroup.
  4. Strava, while not absolutely mandatory, is strongly encouraged for this so you can upload your ride later and be scored.  If you don’t have Strava, please report each segment you do to the ride leader including the names of the people you finished next to so we can give you an approximate placing.  Scoring will be done based on the total accumulated time across all scored segments according to your Strava data, lowest time wins.

First and Second Half of the Season

The Sunday Series Club Racing season will be split into two halves for scoreboards reflecting a first half and second half of the season.  This allows for more focused leaderboard competition and a reset mid-season to start over to compete on a new leaderboard!

First half of the season will be:

Second half of the season will be:

You get to drop 1 race from each half-season to determine your overall score (best 4 of 5 in the first half, best 3 of 4 in the second half)

Master’s Sunday Series Racing

We are including a version of separate scoring for Masters Men’s 50+ racers!  Master’s 50+ will race in the A field and will be scored against the A’s, but Master’s points will be pulled out into a separate Master’s leaderboard.  How does this work?  If Master’s 50+ riders get 4th, 7th, and 8th in the A race, their 4th/7th/8th place points will go towards their Master’s standings.  They’ll be on the Men’s A leaderboard and the separate Master’s leaderboard.

Women’s Sunday Series Racing

Women racing in the Men’s A field will have the same version of separate scoring as the Men’s Master’s 50+ above.  If women riders get 4th/7th/8th in the Men’s A race, their 4th/7th/8th place points will go towards a Women’s A leaderboard, as well as the Men’s A leaderboard.

Women racing in the Men’s B field will have the same version of separate scoring as well.  If women get 4th/7th/8th in the Men’s B race, their 4th/7th/8th place points will go towards a Women’s B leaderboard, as well as the Men’s B leaderboard.

Marshalling a Race

We always need volunteers to score our races!  If you volunteer to be a scorer/timer for a Sunday Series club race yourself, you’ll get 10 points towards your Sunday Series standings at that race!  You can do this up to 2 times per season.  Sign up to marshal here.

Mentoring the C Race

We’re always looking for C-race mentors!  If you are an A/B level rider with experience and would like to help out the C race with in-race coaching and work on tactics, we’d love for you to help!  As a token, you will get 5 points for mentoring the C race one time during the season.  Please let the officers know at the race that you wish to do this.
